When Roy Plunkett discovered polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in 1938, he had no inkling of the extent to which he would have revolutionised the world around him. One day, he happened to open a new container of tetrafluoroethylene gas and nothing came out. He weighed it to ensure that it was full. He cut the open container in two parts and found a white powder when he expected to find gas. That powder was PTFE, polymerised by the tetrafluoroethylene gas. From the moment it was discovered till now, PTFE has been used for a myriad of different applications: automotive, chemical, pharmaceutical, computing, electronic, medical, to quote but a few.
